Josef Penninger, Scientific Director
Josef Penninger is the founding scientific director of IMBA and oversees all research activities at the institute. He is a Professor of Genetics at the University of Vienna, an Adjunct Full Professor of Immunology and Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto, and holds a Honorary Professorship from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Josef worked for 13 years with Amgen Inc., the Ontario Cancer Institute, and the University of Toronto in Canada and relocated in 2003 to Vienna to head IMBA.


Jürgen Knoblich
, Deputy Scientific Director

Jürgen Knoblich obtained his PhD at the Max Planck Institute in Tübingen. He worked for three years at the University of California in San Francisco before he became a group leader at the IMP in 1997. In 2004, he joined IMBA as a senior scientist and he became deputy director in 2005. Jürgen received the FEBS anniversary award and became an EMBO Young Investigator in 2001, was elected as EMBO member in 2002 and was awarded the ELSO prize in 2003. In 2009, he received the Wittgenstein Prize and was awarded an ERC advanced grant. He is chairing the EMBO fellowship committee and is on the editorial board of Current Biology, the European Journal of Cell Biology and Current Opinions in Cell and Developmental Biology.


Michael Krebs
, Administrative Director

Michael Krebs joined the institute in January 2004 and has a degree in Business Adminis­tration as well as an Executive MBA in “Mergers & Acquisitions”. Prior to IMBA, Michael worked for more than 5 years for early stage Biotech companies as a co-founder, CFO, and external consultant. In addition, he brings in 8 years of experience as a Senior Consultant in corporate finance, auditing, and management consulting with Arthur Andersen and as a Project Manager with the global strategy consulting firms L.E.K. Consulting (Spin-off from Bain & Co.) and Mitchell Madison Group (Spin-off from McKinsey / A.T. Kearney). At IMBA, Michael bears responsibility for all financial, administrative and business-related matters.
